The unique Collection of Sculpture and Decorative Arts in the Kunsthistorisches Museum (KHM) is the most important of its kind in the world. In 2002, the galleries were closed and the precious objects removed as the old installation was by now totally inadequate and no longer conformed to international standards for lay-out and lighting, conservation and aesthetics. In 2012, the newly-installed galleries will reopen to the public. The highlight of this year’s exhibition program focuses on Charles the Bold and the glory and fall of this last Duke of Burgundy. The show brings the precious holdings of the still-closed Collection of Sculpture and Decorative Arts to the attention of the public once again. This important collaboration between the KHM, the Historical Museum in Berne, and the Groeninge Museum in Bruges focuses on the »Burgundian inheritance,« the fabulous treasures inherited by Archduke (later Emperor) Maximilian I of Habsburg when he married Mary of Burgundy, the only daughter of the last Duke of Burgundy. The most important holdings from the Collection of Sculpture and Decorative Arts and the Treasury of the KHM, from the collaborating museums, and from the Austrian National Library, the former Imperial Austrian Archive and the archive of the Order of the Golden Fleece will be on view.

Die Kunstkammer des KHM ist die weltweit bedeutendste Sammlung ihrer Art. Die Schausammlung wurde 2002 geschlossen, da die Präsentation baulich, lichttechnisch, konservatorisch und auch ästhetisch nicht mehr den internationalen Standards entsprach. 2012 sollen die Bestände auf 2.700 Quadratmetern in neuem Glanz erstrahlen.
Das Highlight des heurigen Ausstellungsprogramms ist Karl dem Kühnen und dem Glanz und Untergang des letzten Herzogs von Burgund gewidmet. Die Schau soll die kostbaren Bestände der geschlossenen Kunstkammer in Erinnerung rufen. Die kulturhistorische Gemeinschaftsausstellung des Kunsthistorischen Museums mit dem Historischen Museum Bern und dem Groeninge Museum in Brügge stellt das »burgundische Erbe« in den Mittelpunkt, das durch die Heirat der einzigen Tochter Karls des Kühnen, Maria, mit (dem späteren) Kaiser Maximilian I. an die Habsburger kam. Es werden die bedeutendsten Bestände aus der Kunstkammer und der Schatzkammer des KHM, aus den Kooperationsmuseen, aber auch aus der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek, dem Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv und dem Archiv des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies zu sehen sein.
