Director Wolfgang Kos guides a tour of the exhibition, curated by himself, »Urban Clash. Politics, Art and Daily Life around 1930.« At that time, the streets were a battlefield: demonstration marches, enacted mass events, and aggressive propaganda. Political violence was omnipresent in everyday life. The show unfolds a historical and cultural panorama of those decisive years when the future of the young Austrian republic was in limbo between democracy and dictatorship, a fresh start and resignation.
Deep social rifts showed in conflicting attitudes toward urbanity: homeland cult versus openness, native soil versus asphalt jungle, »red« Vienna versus the »black« Alpine republic. On the one hand, there were mass unemployment and poverty, and on the other glamour and modernity: neon signs, frivolous popular tunes, »negro music,« bob cuts, and free love. To this, the folksy right-wingers reacted with antiurban resentment, while the progressists saw in the big city a place of freedom, threatened by what Anton Kuh called »the spirit of St. Kathrein.« In this inflamed atmosphere, art, architecture, and design also were in search of new paths between tradition and modernism.

Direktor Wolfgang Kos führt durch die von ihm kuratierte Ausstellung »Kampf um die Stadt. Politik, Kunst und Alltag um 1930«. Damals wurde die Straße zum Kampffeld: Aufmärsche, Masseninszenierungen und aggressive Propaganda. Politische Gewalt prägte den Alltag. Die Schau bietet ein zeitgeschichtliches und kulturelles Panorama jener entscheidenden Jahre, als die Zukunft der jungen Republik auf der Kippe stand – zwischen Demokratie und Diktatur, Aufbruch und Resignation.
Tiefe Risse zeigten sich in der Haltung zum Urbanen: Heimatkult gegen Offenheit, Scholle gegen Asphalt, »rotes« Wien gegen »schwarze« Alpenrepublik. Einerseits Arbeitslosigkeit und Not, andererseits Glamour und Modernität: Leuchtreklame, frivole Schlager, »Negermusik «, Bubikopf und freie Liebe. Die Volkstümler reagierten mit antiurbanen Ressentiments, für die Fortschrittler war die Großstadt ein Ort der Freiheit, bedroht vom »Geist von St. Kathrein« (Anton Kuh). In diesem ideologisch aufgeheizten Klima suchte man auch in Kunst, Architektur und Design nach neuen Wegen zwischen Tradition und Moderne.
